On 8th Day Of Gaza Massacre, Ground Assault Begins

[Indybay Independent Media Center]Israel Begins Gaza Ground Assault On January 3rd, Israel confirmed its troops have entered the Gaza Strip as attacks on Gaza enter their eighth day. Tanks entered the besieged Gaza Strip though the Beit Hanoun crossing shortly after nightfall on Saturday.Power lines have been cut throughout Gaza, and more than 250,000 people in northern Gaza are without electricity. The Israel government has also announced that it has approved the call-up of tens of thousands of reservist soldiers.

In San Francisco, emergency protests will take place today, January 3rd at Powell and Market at 3pm and at 5pm. A protest is also planned Monday, January 5th, at 8am at Market and Montgomery.

The ground assault comes as the number of Palestinians killed in the past week climbs past 450. In recent days, Israel intensified air and artillery attacks. At least 13 people were killed when a missile struck a crowded mosque in Beit Lahiya; more than 200 people had been inside the Ibrahim al-Maqadna mosque for evening prayers when it was struck and at least 50 were wounded in the attack.

On Friday, January 2, Israel allowed between 350 and 450 foreigners to leave Gaza, but for most Palestinians the borders are closed and 1.6 million people are unable to escape the increasingly deadly Israeli attacks.

Breaking: Israeli ground troops enter Gaza --Israel begins using ground artillery, firing shells from tanks 03 Jan 2009 Israeli troops began moving into Gaza on Saturday night, Israel Defense Forces said. "We have just a short while ago launched the second stage of the operation against Hamas infrastructure," IDF spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich told CNN. Earlier, the Israelis used ground artillery for the first time in the eight-day-old conflict when Israeli tanks fired shells into Gaza from the northern and eastern borders.
Israeli Ground Forces Push Into Gaza 03 Jan 2009 Israeli troops backed by helicopters advanced into Gaza on Saturday, a Palestinian witness and the Israeli army said, in the first ground action of an eight-day offensive against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave. The small column of military vehicles crossed the boundary fence into the northern Gaza Strip under darkness, said the witness, a resident of Beit Lahiya.

Reporting from Jerusalem -- Israeli troops and tanks crossed into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip this evening, widening a week-old assault aimed at halting the militant Palestinian group's rocket fire into Israel.

A column of tanks, some firing their weapons, rolled into the northern part of the coastal enclave as Israeli combat helicopters flew overhead, according to Palestinian residents. Israeli television channels broadcast images of troops marching into the territory.
The ground offensive, launched after a week of punishing airstrikes, is designed to take control of Hamas' rocket-launching areas, the military announced. It said tank, artillery, special operations and intelligence units were taking part.

As Israeli warplanes pounded Hamas positions today, a missile struck a mosque in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya during late-afternoon prayers, killing 13 people inside, Palestinian medical workers reported. Two of the dead were children, they said.

The ground offensive began after dark, following a round of Israeli artillery fire that created a blanket of dust and smoke that obscured the troops' advance.
Israel launched the airstrikes Dec. 27 after Hamas called off a much-violated truce accord that lasted six months. The operation has killed more than 440 Palestinians, including dozens of civilians, according to Palestinian and United Nations counts, but has not stopped the rocket fire from Palestinian militants. Four Israelis have been killed.

Thousands of Israeli troops had been massing along the border for days, and Israeli officials said preparations for the ground offensive were completed Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office said today that the government had ordered the call-up of tens of thousands of military reservists.
