12/29: Over 364 Palestinians Dead As Israel Attacks Gaza [Indybay, Independent Media Center] On December 27th, Israeli air strikes targeted police stations in Gaza killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more. Air strikes continued on December 28th, with the death toll reaching close to 300 by mid-day.
Egypt has opened the Rafah crossing at its border with Gaza to receive wounded Palestinians. The Egyptian government's cooperation with Israel's blockade of Gaza has been very unpopular among Egyptians and Hamas has suggested that ending such cooperation could be a main focus of its response. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Saturday: "The simplest response to the massacre today is to reopen Rafah crossing once and for all. I tell our Arab brothers that the simplest response to the massacre is to end the siege." Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal called on Saturday for Palestinians to wage a new intifada against Israel, including a return to suicide missions.
Protests against the Israeli bombing and invasion are taking place across the Middle-East and Palestine. In Tel-Aviv Hundreds of Arabs and Jews took to the streets to protest the massacre in Gaza yelling “no one can tell us that this massacre is suppose to protect us.” The Israeli police attacked the protesters and six people were detained. The Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, an umbrella group of Arab organizations, declared a national strike and a mourning day in the Arab sector beginning Sunday morning.
On Sunday, Israel kept its bombing of civilian infrastructure during the day and mobilize its ground troops to prepare to enter Gaza. Demonstrations calling on Israel to stop the massacre took place all over the world. In Europe demonstration were held in London and Madrid in front of Israel's embassy. In occupied Palestine, Israeli soldiers opened fire on a demonstration in Ni'lin, killing one protester and critically wounding another. in Jaffa, activists and residents held sign and march on Yefet st. In San Francisco, a protest took place at Powell and Market at 12pm. Photos: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6
On December 29th, there was a protest at Feinstein's Office at 5pm; around 5:30pm, hundreds of protesters in San Francisco took over the intersection of Montgomery And Market to protest the Gaza massacre. Slightly before 6:30pm, police ordered protesters to clear the intersection. 30-40 members of a Jewish anti-occupation activist group refused to leave the street as police threatened arrests. After over an hour of threats, nobody was arrested and at 7:25pm everyone marched to Union Square and then to Powell and Market.
On Tuesday December 30th there will be a protest at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco at 5pm, as part of a National Day of Action against the attacks on Gaza.
Chicago: Protest condemns Israeli massacres in GazaBy Stephanie Weiner, Fightback News Servicehttp://fightbacknews.org/2008/12/chicago-protest-condemns-israeli-massacres-in-gaza.htm
Chicago, IL - 500 people gathered here Dec. 28 for an emergency rally and press conference to condemn the Israeli attacks in the Gaza. The crowd formed a circle around the speakers in front of the Water Tower at noon. The real anger was felt when most of the group moved to the corner to chant at the lone Zionist with an Israeli flag across the street. The militant chanting ranged from, "Free, free Palestine!" to "End the occupation now!"
The young crowd, almost all wearing Palestinian scarves or carrying flags, called for an end to U.S. money to Israel. They said it most simply in their chant, "Down, down with Israel." The protesters left with plans to pass on the word about an even larger rally called for this coming Friday afternoon, Jan. 2, at the Tribune Plaza, which is one block from the Israeli Consulate.
DEMOCRACY NOW! RadioIsraeli Attacks Kill Over 310 in Gaza in One of Israel's Bloodiest Attacks on Palestinians Since 1948 *
Amidst worldwide protests, Israel is continuing its bombing campaign against Gaza for the third consecutive day and preparing to launch a possible ground invasion. Following months of a crippling blockade, this has been described as one of Israel's bloodiest attacks on Palestinians since 1948. Latest reports indicate that 310 people have been killed and 1,400 injured in the aerial strikes across the Gaza Strip since Saturday morning. The latest targets of the air strikes include the Hamas Interior Ministry building and the Islamic University. Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced today that Israel is in an "all-out war with Hamas and its proxies" in Gaza. Fears of a ground invasion are growing after Israel declared a military buffer zone around Gaza, closing off the strip and its 1.5 million residents to journalists and civilians.
We speak to Dr. Moussa El-Haddad and Fida Qishta in Gaza, Dr. Mustafa Barghouti in Ramallah, Gideon Levy in Tel Aviv and Ali Abunimah in the US.

UPDATE FROM THE ELECTRONIC INTIFADA
PALESTINE : OPINION/EDITORIAL:THE DOGS OF WAR By Osamah Khalil, The Electronic Intifada, 29 December 2008As a consequence of his foreign policy misadventures, Bushleaves the Middle East in flames and America's reputationin tatters. Yet, one thing has remained constant for thealoof president: deference to an Israeli "show ofstrength" rather than diplomacy. Only a year ago, Bushhosted the Annapolis conference that "relaunched" the"peace process" and then predictably stood by as itstalled out. Unable to launch a war against Iran, captureOsama bin Laden, pacify Afghanistan or Iraq, or broker aPalestinian-Israeli peace, rather than ride into thesunset in the waning days of his presidency, Bush isdetermined to leave in a final blaze of maliciousincompetence. As it has been so often over the past eightyears, the site of his enmity is Gaza. Osamah Khalilcomments for The Electronic Intifada.
