A mother with two sons serving in Iraq will protest war alongside the mother of a soldier recently killed in Iraq . They will be joined by Rose Gentle and Peter Brierley. On Wednesday 1 March at 12 midday Pauline Hickey, Peter Brierley, Rose Gentle and Janet Lowrie will deliver a letter to Tony Blair at Downing Street asking for a meeting with the Prime Minister. They wish to raise their concerns about the continuing war and occupation in Iraq. They are calling for the withdrawal of the British troops. Janet Lowrie has two sons serving in Iraq with the Highlanders Ist Battalion. Pauline Hickey is the mother of Sergeant Christian Hickey of the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, who was killed in Iraq on the 18 October 2005. Peter Brierley’s son Shaun was killed at the beginning of the war. Rose Gentle’s son, Gordon Gentle, was killed in a roadside bombing in Basra in June 2004. Military Families have asked to meet Tony Blair on many occasions but he has refused to do them this courtesy. Rose said , ‘I am being contacted by more and more mothers and families saying they don’t want their sons to go back to Iraq or saying they no longer believe in this war’. The situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate and the presence of British troops is part of the problem and not the solution. |
